ESG employees complete offshore safety training

Qualification in accordance with GWO standard allows work on the high seas

Whether as a scientist or engineer - safety and survival training is a requirement for working on the high seas. Twelve employees of ESG Edelstahl und Umwelttechnik Stralsund GmbH (ESG) thus completed a corresponding course in July 2015 according to specifications of the Global Wind Organization (GWO). They may now work in offshore areas in acc. with industrial safety regulations, effective immediately.

ESG’s CEO Burkhard Schuldt sees advantages not only for the company but also for ESG’s employees: "In this way, we are expanding our range of services from pure activity on the mainland to work on the open sea. Thanks to the implemented safety training, our employees are well prepared for the new tasks in the offshore sector. They were also able to further develop personally and professionally. Their safety is just as important to us as the satisfaction of our clients, for whom ESG, as a result of this training, will in the future be able to take on additional offshore contracts with our usual competent and reliable delivery."

Course provides knowledge under realistic conditions

The five-day course, which provided extensive training on sea survival, working at heights, fire awareness, manual handling and boat landing, took place in the fishing port of Rostock under realistic conditions. In addition to basic knowledge of maritime safety, the participants learned the use of life-saving equipment and boats, the donning of life-jackets and survival suits and how to stay afloat in the water. In addition, the erection of a capsized life raft and working at height (such as on wind turbines) were included in the training agenda. Furthermore, the simulation of fires on ships or oil rigs was covered, for which the participants learned, among other things, to always maintain an escape route during firefighting actions.

For the ESG employees, the five intensive days of training were an important and necessary experience. After successfully completing a written exam at the end, they are now well prepared for their future activities on the high seas.
